The Netherlands Gambling Authority (Ksa) has imposed a fine of €400,000 on Optdeck Service Limited, the operator behind the Unibet brand, for allowing players registered in Cruks to access its services. Optdeck has stated that it will not appeal the fine.
Cruks is a registry aimed at protecting individuals from the dangers of gambling through a Gokstop, a mechanism that prevents licensed gambling operators from accepting these players, both in physical and online gambling environments.
To comply with Cruks regulations, operators must verify a player's social security number (BSN) before allowing them to register. In mid-2023, the Ksa received a report that Unibet had failed to conduct these checks properly during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. After investigation, it was confirmed that Unibet had indeed allowed players listed in Cruks to access their services.
The Gokstop is a vital tool for preventing gambling addiction and protecting users from the harmful effects of gambling. Therefore, it is crucial that operators perform these checks diligently. Non-compliance results in penalties, as demonstrated in this case.
