May’s was 24.8% up from April’s MOP (Macanese pataca) 2.67bn total, the weakest month of the year to date for Macau. However it remained down significantly year-on-year, falling 68.0% form May 2021’s MOP 10.44bn total. The MOP3.34bn total for May is also the second-lowest monthly figure reported by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau in 2022 to date. This means that for 2022, Macau’s gaming revenue for the first five months of the year totalled MOP23.79bn, a 44.0% drop from the prior year.

This is reflected in a host of operators active in Macau reporting year-on-year declines for the first quarter of 2021.SJM Holdings, which operates casinos and entertainment venues in Macau, reported a 2.4% year-on-year decrease in revenue for its first quarter in May. Other operators – including Melco, APE Macau and Galaxy Entertainment – also reported Q1 declines at the beginning of the month.
