According to official quarterly statistics data, total gross gaming revenue (GGR) for betting, online casino, gaming machines and land-based casino in the first quarter of 2022 amounted to DKK 1,574 million (€211 million). This is a year-on-year increase of DKK 266 million (€35.7 million), equivalent to 20.3%.

The regulator recalled that, to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus, land-based casinos, gaming rooms and restaurants were closed during the first quarter of 2021, which meant that it was not possible to bet during this period.

Then, in the first quarter of 2022, land-based casinos and card rooms were closed in January. Naturally, this caused an increase in the total GGR for the gaming market in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the first quarter of 2021.

Online betting and casinos are the two gaming sectors that have grown the most in Denmark since 2012, when the gaming market was partially liberalized. However, in the first quarter of 2022, the GGR for both sectors fell compared to the first quarter of 2021. The GGR fell by DKK 22 million (€2.9 million) and DKK 18 million (€24 million) for betting and casino online, respectively, which is equivalent to 3.7 and 2.5%.

In 2021, the total GGR for the Danish gaming market was 9.6 billion Danish kroner (€1.29 billion). Distributed as follows:
  • The largest gaming sector was lotteries with a GGR of DKK 3.4 billion (€456 million), which is equivalent to just over a third of the total gaming market.
  • The smallest gaming sector was land-based casinos with DKK 220 million (€29 million) in GGR accounting for 2% of the total gaming market in Denmark.
