Brazilian Players Surge in Portugal's Online Gambling Market: Represent 51.6% of Foreign Participants

The volume of sports betting reached €462.3 million, up 29.3% compared to Q2 2023, though it saw a 19.5% decrease from the previous quarter. Meanwhile, the volume of gambling bets totaled €4.37 billion, showing a 34.7% increase from the same period last year.

Revenue by Game Category

• Sports Betting: Gross revenue amounted to €103.3 million, up 23.1% compared to Q2 2023 and a 2.8% increase from the previous quarter.
• Gambling: Gross revenue reached €158.5 million, with a 29.9% increase compared to the previous year, although it experienced a slight 1.1% decrease from the last quarter.

Activity by Betting Type

In sports betting, football accounted for nearly 70% of the total volume. Tennis made up 20%, while basketball represented about 7%. In gambling, slot machine bets represented 82.3% of the total, followed by French roulette at 6.5%.

Player Registration

The total number of registered players reached 4.4 million, a 16.2% increase compared to the previous year. During the quarter, 287,600 new players registered, and 256,900 players self-excluded from online gambling.

Nationality and Residence Area

95.2% of registered players are Portuguese. Among foreign players, Brazilians represent 51.6%. The districts of Porto and Lisbon have the highest number of registered players, with 21.2% and 21.1%, respectively.

Combating Illegal Gambling

In Q2 2024, 38 notifications for the closure of illegal operators were made, and 93 websites were reported for blocking. Additionally, 3 referrals were made to the Public Ministry for initiating legal proceedings related to illegal gambling.
