Aristocrat Technologies secured a preliminary victory in its lawsuit against Light & Wonder (L&W), with the court ordering L&W to stop offering its Dragon Train game in an intellectual property infringement case filed with the District Court of Nevada.
Aristocrat claims that L&W’s Dragon Train game shares multiple similarities with its own Dragon Link series. Filed in February, the lawsuit accuses L&W of misappropriating intellectual property, copying game mechanics, and infringing copyright. Aristocrat also raised concerns about several former executives now in senior roles at L&W, alleging they played a role in the development of Dragon Train and that L&W has “misappropriated trade secrets” related to the Dragon Link series. While L&W launched Dragon Train in March, Dragon Link has been in the market since 2017.
On September 23, the court granted Aristocrat’s request for a preliminary injunction regarding its trade secret claims, halting L&W’s commercialization of Dragon Train in its current form. The court found that Aristocrat is "extremely likely to succeed" in proving L&W misappropriated trade secrets during the development of Dragon Train.
The court ruled that by misappropriating trade secrets related to Dragon Link and Lightning Link, L&W was able to develop Dragon Train “without investing equivalent time and money.” The preliminary injunction emphasized the public interest in "protecting trade secrets and preventing competitors from gaining an unfair advantage."
Matthew Primmer, Aristocrat’s chief product officer, welcomed the decision, stating that it underscores the value of their intellectual property and reaffirms their commitment to protecting business integrity. Aristocrat plans to continue its legal action, seeking all “appropriate remedies to address the harm” caused by L&W’s actions.
