During the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Bingo Association, Tim Miller, Executive Director of the Gambling Commission, praised the constructive and collaborative approach the Association has taken on key issues affecting the UK's gambling sector.
Miller began his address by emphasizing the importance of building a relationship based on early-stage regulatory compliance. "We want a collaborative relationship with the gambling industry, one that promotes compliance from the earliest opportunity," he stated, highlighting that such an approach can yield more meaningful and quicker results than relying solely on formal enforcement powers.
A central topic of the speech was the ongoing public consultation on gaming machines, focusing on technical standards and testing strategies. In response to strong sector engagement, the Commission announced an extension of the consultation deadline to 3 June. "The decision to extend the deadline is another example of how positive stakeholder engagement can help shape our decisions," Miller said.
He also acknowledged the joint work undertaken with the Bingo Association to improve the sector’s evidence base, including through the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB), which has become the largest of its kind worldwide. "Thanks to this constructive approach, we’ve developed new questions that will provide better insights into bingo participation," he added.
Another pressing issue raised was the rise of illegal bingo operations. Miller encouraged attendees to confidentially share any evidence with the Commission. "We can’t take action without evidence. This is particularly relevant to land-based activity," he emphasized.
The speech concluded with a call to continue along the path of cooperation. "The Gambling Commission is committed to making gambling safer, fairer, and crime-free. We can best achieve that by working constructively with the industry. I’m pleased to say that’s exactly what we’re doing with the bingo sector. Let’s continue in that spirit," Miller concluded.
