The Secretariat of Prizes and Betting of Brazil (SPA) has intensified its monitoring, oversight, and consumer protection activities ahead of the kickoff of the World Cup, one of the events featuring the highest promotional activity and sports betting volumes.
As part of this strategy, the SPA—under the Ministry of Finance—and the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) organized the webinar "Challenges and Strategies for Consumer Defense in the Fixed-Odds Betting Market in Brazil."
The meeting brought together representatives from the National Consumer Defense System, including state and municipal consumer protection agencies, public defenders, prosecutors, and specialized entities.
Advertising and Consumer Protection
The objective of the session was to reinforce cooperation between the authorities in charge of regulating betting and the bodies responsible for protecting consumers.
The General Coordinator for Monitoring Responsible Gaming at the SPA, Andiara Maria Braga Maranhão, and the General Coordinator for Betting Oversight, Renato Pucci, presented the main measures implemented following the regulation of the Brazilian market.
Among the issues analyzed were responsible advertising, the monitoring of operator activities, and instruments aimed at protecting the financial and mental health of bettors.
The proximity of the World Cup increases authorities' concerns regarding commercial campaigns, the intensive acquisition of new users, and the necessity for advertising messages to comply with the rules applicable to the regulated market.
More Coordination Against Illegal Gambling
The SPA also explained actions intended to combat betting operators acting without authorization in Brazil.
Agencies integrated into the National Consumer Defense System will be able to collaborate in identifying irregular websites, campaigns, and practices, as well as forwarding information to the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting to facilitate investigations.
