Striking fact: gambling, the third activity in Spaniards' online purchases on foreign websites
In purchases made from Spain to e-commerce abroad, gambling and betting occupy the third position by turnover, with 5.9% of the total.
According to data published on 2 October, gambling was the third activity with the highest turnover in e-commerce from Spain abroad during the first quarter of 2026, with 5.9% of the total. It is only surpassed by services auxiliary to financial intermediation (9.8%) and clothing (8.6%).
Behind are travel agencies and tour operators (5.6%), air transport (4.7%), restaurants (4.3%), department stores (3.8%), hotels (3.5%), subscriptions to television channels (2.7%) and financial intermediation (2.5%).
Purchases from Spain in foreign stores totaled 16,604 million euros between January and March, 14.0% more than a year earlier. They accounted for 56.0% of all e-commerce turnover in Spain, and 94.1% of them were made in stores in the European Union.
A year ago, gambling was in fourth place in this ranking, with 6.1%. It has gained one place although its share has fallen slightly, because travel agencies and tour operators, third in the first quarter of 2025 with 6.5%, have fallen to 5.6%.
In e-commerce as a whole, which had a turnover of 29,643 million euros (+15.1%), gambling maintains fifth position, with 5.1%, compared to 4.9% a year earlier. In purchases within Spain (9,207 million euros, +17.0%), gambling has 5.3% and occupies eighth place; in the first quarter of 2025 it had 4.4% and was seventh. In purchases from abroad in Spanish stores , it does not appear in the top ten activities.
By number of transactions, gambling and betting continue to lead e-commerce, with 9.9% of the more than 549 million transactions in the quarter, compared to 8.5% in the first quarter of 2025.
