LAST MINUTE The limit per operator is over: Consumer Affairs implements a global cap of 3,300 euros per month per player in online gambling
In testing and mandatory from March 26, 2027
The Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030, through the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling, has launched the system of joint deposit limits. This is the tool developed by Royal Decree 520/2026, of 24 June. For the first time, online gambling in Spain will have a personal and global deposit limit that is applied at the same time in all operators in which the player has an account.
700, 1,750 and 3,300 euros
The default joint limits are €700 per day, €1,750 per week and €3,300 per four-week period. They will apply to each person who plays. Deposits made by a user will be counted together across all operators, and when the sum exceeds the limit, no operator will be able to allow them to continue depositing.
Until now, the limit was set per operator and not per person. According to Consumer Affairs, this allowed the planned limits to be exceeded by distributing the activity among several platforms.
Three working days to change the limit and one increase every three months
Each player may voluntarily modify or eliminate the default limits, with a specific procedure and with "reinforced guarantees of information on the risks associated with gambling".
To avoid impulsive behavior, any modification or suppression will take three working days to become effective. In addition, the limit may only be increased once every three months.
Game Ordering will monitor limits in real-time
The management of the system corresponds to the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling, which has developed a technological tool capable of checking compliance with the limits in real time. According to the Ministry, this model avoids "unnecessary exchanges of information" between operators and ensures greater protection of personal data.
Consumer Affairs estimates that the measure will mainly affect those who play at several operators, who are approximately a third of active online gambling players in Spain. The new system is additional and complementary to the deposit limits that already exist at each operator.
In testing and mandatory from March 26, 2027
The system is in the testing phase and will come into force definitively on March 26, 2027, although Consumer Affairs assures that it is already "fully available" for users.
Along with the joint limits, the Ministry has launched the Player Portal. From there, it is possible to manage, consult and modify the limits, see the status of the requests and check that they are really applied in each operator.
The system closes a long journey. Consumer Affairs presented the draft royal decree in September 2023, the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling awarded Sopra Steria the cloud infrastructure and the Council of Ministers approved the limits last June. At that time, Jdigital already warned of the risk to the legal market. This is how the new limits will work.
