The Gauselmann Group is the first in the industry to officially express its interest in the bidding process for the Westspiel Casinos in Germany, located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).
As we posted over the summer, the state-owned company Westspiel at NRW currently operates four casinos in Duisburg, Dortmund, Aachen and Bad Oeynhausen which together have approximately 900 employees. In this regard, the total value of the Westspiel Group, during the planned concession period of 15 years, is estimated at 2.7 billion euros.
Among the requirements to participate in the bidding process announced last Friday by the Ministry of Finance, we highlight the following: having been active in the casino business for three years and having at least 20 million euros of capital.
On the other hand, in addition to the participation of the Gauselmann Group, industry experts anticipate the registration of the Novomatic Group and the company Casinos Austria.
Regarding the tender process, Finance Minister Lutz Lienenkämper commented that it was designed as a "non-discriminatory, transparent and European-wide concession award procedure."
Interested parties must register for the first phase by February 1st to qualify for the next stage of bidding and negotiation. The awarding of the concession could come into effect in early 2022.
It should be noted that the concession includes the operation of up to six casinos, so two more locations could be opened. On the other hand, the contract may be awarded to a multi-partner consortium.
