The International Gaming Institute of the University of Nevada – Las Vegas (UNLV) works together with the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians in a program that seeks to establish the best responsible gaming practices in the gaming operations of the tribe.
Referring to this collaboration, Bo Bernhard, Executive Director of the International Gaming Institute and recently recognized as a Responsible Gaming Ambassador at the fourth edition of the INFOPLAY Awards for Responsible Gaming and CSR, said: “We look forward to a collaboration that we believe will introduce a new level of research-based programs that reflect centuries of cultural commitment to community by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.”
We must mention that the program seeks to promote responsible gaming through training, education, research and integration in the Yaamava' Resort and Casino of San Manuel in Highland, California, and soon Palms in Las Vegas.
Research will center on the relationship between the gaming operator and the player, program effectiveness and the different attitudes, perceptions and awareness about healthy gambling.
As Alan Feldman, also from the International Gaming Institute, explains: "This is a fundamental recasting and redefinition of what responsible gaming means."
He also points out that the tribe is a leader in the field of responsible gaming and offers a third-party exclusion rule where family members can lobby the commission to prevent someone from placing bets on Yaamava.
The San Manuel Entertainment Authority, which operates Yaamava', hopes that the collaboration will help users learn the necessary tools to make responsible decisions. Also, that employees can detect warning signs and be able to guide users if necessary.
In the words of Jacob Coin, spokesman for the San Manuel Tribe, “The authority is eager to help customers enjoy gambling in a healthy and safe environment, one that embodies tribal values like respect and caring for one another.”
It is important to remember that the Global Gaming Awards in 2021 named San Manuel Responsible Business of the Year for its philanthropic efforts during the pandemic and its commitment to socially conscious business practices.
Along these lines, San Manuel similarly donated a combined $9 million to two UNLV colleges in 2020 to help expand the university's tribal gaming education curriculum.
