More specifically, May revenue was up 3.7% from May 2021 and 17.4% higher than revenue from the six commercial casinos in May 2019 before the pandemic.
In this regard, we must remember that the best month on record was July 2021, when casinos made a record $180 million.
Nearly 77% of May's market was split between MGM National Harbor and Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland, of the Cordish Group with earnings of $76 million and $62.7 million respectively.
The combined GGR of the two casinos was $138.7 million, while Caesars Entertainment's Horseshoe Baltimore came in a distant third with $17.6 million.
Maryland's three resort-style casinos (Ocean Downs in Berlin, Hollywood Casino Perryville and Rocky Gap Resort) won the remaining $22.4 million.
As for Maryland sports betting, it bears mentioning that it went live at each casino sans Rocky Gap in December, but the expanded gaming is not expected to provide substantial gaming and associated tax revenue until online operations are allowed to begin.
This, for now, appears to be very complex to accomplish because Maryland law includes specific language related to diversity and minority inclusion.
According to the Maryland General Assembly: “The bill expresses the intent of the General Assembly that the sports wagering program is to be implemented in a manner that, to the extent permitted by law, maximizes the ability of minorities, women, and minority and women -owned businesses to participate in the sports wagering industry, including through the ownership of licensed sports wagering entities under the bill”.
Essentially, the Maryland Sports Betting Application Review Commission, which licenses retail and mobile sports betting operators, must consider inclusive measures when creating rules and reviewing license applications.
