The illegal betting scandal that erupted in October 2025 with the arrest of 34 individuals linked to the NBA has taken a decisive turn. Former player Damon Jones, 49, and former close teammate of LeBron James with the Cleveland Cavaliers, pleaded guilty on Tuesday before the Federal Court in Brooklyn (New York), confirming the existence of a match-fixing and betting scheme that has infiltrated the heart of the world’s top basketball league.

Jones admitted to using privileged information from locker rooms and medical reports from several NBA franchises to defraud legitimate sportsbooks during the period between December 2022 and March 2024.

“Place a big bet on Milwaukee before the information comes out”

One of the key messages in the indictment outlines the scheme’s modus operandi. Jones wrote to another member of the network: “Place a big bet on Milwaukee before the information comes out.” This was on February 9, 2023, when the former player was warning that LeBron James would not play the Los Angeles Lakers’ game against the Bucks — information he had direct access to while serving as the player’s personal trainer that season.

The strategy involved betting against teams affected by late injury news before the information was officially released by the franchise, exploiting a window in which sportsbooks had not yet adjusted their odds.

First major judicial admission in the case
Federal prosecutor Joseph Nocella, leading the investigation, stated outside the courthouse that Jones “turned his fame and his connections in professional basketball into a complex illegal betting operation,” using confidential locker room and medical information to defraud legal sportsbooks.

Alongside Jones, other prominent names in the investigation include Terry Rozier, a 32-year-old point guard currently a free agent after playing for the Miami Heat, and Chauncey Billups, Hall of Famer and head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. Both have pleaded not guilty, unlike Jones, whose confession strengthens the prosecution’s case and significantly implicates the remaining defendants.

Jones’s guilty plea marks the first major judicial admission in the FBI-led investigation unveiled in October 2025 and opens the door for his testimony to be used against other accused individuals in upcoming trials. For the NBA, the case represents one of the most serious integrity challenges in decades and reignites the debate about the relationship between major professional sports leagues and the legal sports betting industry in the United States.
