Flutter UK&I has announced a new £500,000 Cash4Clubs, its grassroots sport support programme. The initiative, developed in conjunction with charity Sported, will open applications on 1 October to help clubs in the UK and Ireland cope with rising costs, purchase equipment and facilitate adult sport participation.

The programme will distribute 225 £2,000 grants and will incorporate, for the first time, five £10,000 grants aimed at driving more far-reaching improvements at clubs in difficulty. The funds can be used according to the needs of each entity, an approach that gives local leaders the ability to decide where the financial support will have the greatest impact.

Since its inception in 2008, Cash4Clubs has channelled more than £7 million into community sport. According to Flutter, £1.3 million has been distributed among 640 clubs since 2024, with beneficiaries of up to a hundred sports modalities, from netball to wheelchair rugby.

For professionals in the gaming sector, the initiative offers an example of corporate social responsibility sustained over time, articulated through small grants of local scope and an alliance with a specialized entity. Sported participates in the evaluation of applications and in the distribution of funds.

The call focuses on organizations that use sport to address problems such as rural isolation, economic hardship or mental health challenges. More than half of the clubs funded since 2024 serve athletes with disabilities or communities of different racial origins, according to data provided by the company.

Former footballers Alan Shearer and Graeme Souness are backing the launch and encouraging clubs to apply. Both have visited beneficiaries to find out where the grants are going. "You should never underestimate the difference a small grant can make to the survival of a grassroots club or local community group," Souness said.

Jill Douglas, sports presenter and member of the board of trustees of Sported, particularly highlights the flexibility of the program: "Cash4Clubs' funding, without a restricted destination, allows clubs to use that money wherever they see fit." In her opinion, leaving those decisions in the hands of those who work on the ground is essential.

The initiative has also received the support of Louie French, Conservative spokesman for the British opposition on gambling, who has valued the continuity of Flutter's commitment in the face of the economic pressures that clubs are enduring. Cash4Clubs was also recognised as the best grassroots sport initiative at the Women's Football Awards held last May.
