The online gambling containment formula in Belgium: stablishing weekly deposit limits

The highest authority on gaming regulation - both online and in person - in Belgium, the Belgian Gaming Commission decided to limit the weekly deposits of all online players in the country. A measure to ensure that players do not get carried away during their COVID-19 self-isolation in a context of total absence of any face-to-face gaming activity after the closure of all physical establishments since mid-March.

With the arrival of confinement measures in the country, the Belgian gaming regulator imposed a series of measures that we should consider less restrictive than those that have been taken in Spain. Mainly, in pursuit of the goal of safeguarding players who may potentially have self-control issues by spending more time at home, the action put forward by the Belgian Gaming Commission focused on setting new weekly deposit limits to ensure players don't get carried away. during its COVID-19 self-isolation.

In this way, the BGC announced that customers of regulated websites could only allow deposits totaling € 500 per week per player in all licensed operators. In addition to the new limit, the Belgian Regulator released a guide with tips on how to handle the temptation to play as a means of relieving the boredom of social isolation. Something similar to what the French regulator has done as we reported yesterday on Infoplay.

This measure comes at a time when face-to-face gambling in the country is completely gone after the closure of casinos, slot machine rooms, cafes with betting kiosks, retail betting offices, even sales in press kiosks ... for thus avoiding further transmission of COVID-19. In this matter, the government has offered face-to-face operators the option of requesting tax exemptions equivalent to 1/12 of their annual rate for each month that the blockade persists.
