After the presentation of a proposal for a European regulation of Artificial Intelligence
What are the benefits for the gaming industry?

The European Commission has proposed a regulation for Artificial Intelligence (AI) considering the associated risks, as well as the security, well-being, and fundamental rights of the citizens of the European Union. Being closely related to digital services, AI can bring great benefits to the gaming industry.

As explained by the European Commission, AI can contribute to customer identification, detection of problematic gaming, fraud prevention or the use of gaming for criminal purposes such as money laundering. However, it could also be misused by illegal operators.

Another risk of improper use in the industry could be related to games of skill such as horse racing, where the use of AI can be detrimental and undermine the integrity of the betting activity and increase the risk of manipulation.

Considering the above, the European Commission explains that a very fine balance should thus be achieved between the deployment of AI for commercial purposes and the respect of necessary consumer protection, public order, and personal data protection rules in the gambling sector.

In this regard, it should be noted that the Ethical Guidelines for reliable artificial intelligence could offer good guidance, but the implementation of such technologies should be authorized and supervised by the national rules of the gaming regulators.

In addition to some of the advantages described above, we highlight the possibilities of contributing to the protection of the player and the promotion of responsible gaming, since it allows classifying the players by risk profiles considering various aspects of the observed behaviours.

Other applications of AI in the gaming sector:
  • AI can be applied for player registration to automate identification and validation processes and apply facial recognition tools.
  • Personalization of the player experience by understanding player behaviour and engaging into behavioural clustering which allows for a multidimensional view when making recommendations to the players, which well-done can increase activation rates in the early stages, as well as retention rates of loyal players in the later stages.
