Brahim Mohamed Aslimani, Head of Responsible Gambling at Bally's Interactive, Discusses Implementation of Latest Phases of Safer Gambling Environment Real Decree in Spain

Aslimani acknowledges the significant workload involved in aligning Bally's Group systems with these regulations, but emphasizes the need for more comprehensive approaches to address potential gambling-related issues. While regulatory compliance is essential, Aslimani believes that true progress in player protection requires going beyond simple regulatory requirements.

This week, the final requirements of Royal Decree 176/2023 of March 14, which develops Safer Gambling Environments, are activated. A second phase, which limits the use of credit payment methods for vulnerable users (with intensive or risky behavior), changes the way gaming sessions are set up before starting to bet, and notifies the user periodically about their activity, among others. This is just part of all the requirements that were developed and launched in September of last year (new player categorizations, new communications about activity and trajectory, conceptual changes, self-exclusion methods...).

All the new legislation regarding safer gambling is being strictly applied by Bally's Group (Botemanía and Monopoly Casino), which has involved a significant workload to align our systems with what the regulations require. However, let's be honest: even with full compliance, these are a set of measures that do not effectively address the possible issues that may affect individuals developing an addiction. It has been like shooting flies with cannons when we know, through governmental and European means, that the figures remain very low. This does not deter us from continuing to work and advocate for responsible gaming, but without stigmatizing gambling when the vast majority of those who enjoy it do so safely and understand the risks. And, as it should be, any measure for the welfare and protection of the user will always be more than welcome.

On a personal level, leading this major project in all aspects (training, technical, coordination, leadership, data management, operationally, etc.) throughout 2023 (and into 2024) has been something that, despite the time and stress involved, has continued to help me develop my career and position within the sector and such a large company like Bally's Interactive. It's something I am grateful for to all who have trusted and continue to trust me, especially those who have endured my way of working.

The outcome has been incredible from all the angles we have worked on. And as I have tried to do since taking on this responsibility in 2020, my duty now will be to continue to be at the forefront of player protection and go beyond what the law requires (procedures, informational campaigns, new processes, operational changes, agreements with third parties like Gamban, awareness, internal support...). Especially now, after also taking charge of the Customer Due Diligence team, in addition to all aspects of Safer Gaming and its strategy, planning, and development, and being the person responsible for the company before the DGOJ.
