Spain’s Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) has published its quarterly report for Q1 2025, revealing that the country’s online gambling sector generated a Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) of €398.11 million, marking a 13.68% increase compared to the same quarter in 2024, despite a slight -2.68% decline from the previous quarter.
Deposits and withdrawals by Spanish players saw significant growth year-on-year, with deposits rising by 23.85% and withdrawals by 29.38%. Compared to Q4 2024, deposits increased by 8.13% and withdrawals by 10.64%. Marketing expenditure also rose 1.74% quarter-on-quarter, while the number of new player accounts jumped 14.39%.
Segment Breakdown of Online Gambling in Spain
The GGR of €398.11 million was distributed across the main segments as follows:
Sports Betting: €165.90 million (41.67%)
Casino Games: €203.06 million (51.01%)
Poker: €25.52 million (6.41%)
Bingo: €3.63 million (0.91%)
Sports betting showed an annual increase of 11.17% but a -6.35% drop from the previous quarter. Traditional fixed-odds betting rose 3.50%, while live betting declined -15.62%. Horse racing bets surged 16.62%, while other fixed-odds betting fell -34.09%.
Bingo grew 4.23% quarter-on-quarter but dropped -13.47% year-on-year.
Casino games reported a stable quarter with 0.09% growth from Q4, and a strong 20.64% annual rise, largely due to a 42.06% increase in slot machine revenue. Punto y Banca saw a dramatic 33.77% quarterly increase.
Poker recorded a small quarterly decline of -0.11% and a yearly drop of -10.31%. Within the vertical, cash games increased 4.54%, while tournament poker fell -1.70%. Year-on-year, cash poker declined -19.81%, and tournament poker -6.28%.
Contests continue to represent a negligible portion of the Spanish GGR.
Marketing Spend and User Activity in Spain
Total marketing spend reached €164.86 million, broken down into:
Promotions: €88.55 million
Advertising: €59.71 million
Affiliates: €13.37 million
Sponsorships: €3.24 million
Compared to Q1 2024, marketing spending in Spain increased by 43.97%. Sponsorship grew 238.67%, promotions 58.32%, and advertising 38.13%, while affiliate spending dropped -7.19%.
Monthly active gambling accounts in Spain averaged 1,748,252, up 30.82% year-on-year. Monthly new accounts reached 190,456, up 38.05% annually.
