The Gambling Commission, the highest gambling regulatory authority in the United Kingdom, has published a study showing the impact of the restrictive measures implemented due to Covid-19, which have affected gaming behavior between March and October 2020.
In this regard, the Commission has highlighted that the data analyzed covers online and land-based games from licensed betting operators (LBOs) found on the main streets of Great Britain.
According to the Gambling Commission, the online market had a month-on-month increase of 29% in gross gambling yield (GGY), up by 12% in the number of bets and a 7% increase in active accounts.
Other highlights are:
- The average duration of the session remains at 21 minutes
- About 8% of all sessions last more than an hour.
- The number of online slot sessions that lasted more than an hour increased by 12% (to 2.2 million) in October compared to September, although this increase was in line with the increase in sessions overall
- 1% monthly increases on bets / spins made
- 9% increase in GGY (to £ 204 million)
On the other hand, the Gambling Commission has reiterated its commitment to protecting users, which is why it has contacted online operators to recall the guide published in May which emphasizes the need for improved affordability checks, the prevention of reverse withdrawals and restrictions on bonus offers.
Finally, the Gambling Commission continues to work on tracking risks related to Covid-19 through the following actions:
- Assessing the impact of the strengthened guidance issued to operators
- Collecting and publishing the data being gathered
- Supporting the industry as land-based premises begin to open
- Where evidence identifies additional risks faced by consumers, taking further action to protect consumers.
