The Premier League has asked English football clubs to support self-regulation of bookmaker sponsorships so that it can be phased out over the next three years. Under league rules, support for the proposal from at least 14 clubs would see it adopted immediately.
According to various UK media, the government prefers self-regulation to a ban, and is therefore willing to accept that Premier League clubs voluntarily give up sponsorships from the gaming sector.
Other sports outlets have recently reported that the Premier League had suggested to the government that branding on the sleeves of shirts should be allowed to continue indefinitely, as should perimeter advertising.
More specifically, the government's long-awaited White Paper, to be published soon, amending the current Gambling Law of 2005, will urge clubs to self-regulate on the subject, but this measure would be subject to a clause that would allow it to be annulled with a two-year notice in certain circumstances.
