The news was confirmed by the Indian Gaming Association in Washington, D.C., sparking an outpouring of condolences from across the sector. Among the many tributes was one from the European Casino Association (ECA), which expressed its “deep sadness” at the passing of a leader remembered as “a visionary, a bridge-builder, and a tireless defender of the industry’s integrity.”

Two decades of service to tribal sovereignty and economic growth

Since taking on the role of IGA Chairman in 2000, Ernie Stevens dedicated his career to advancing tribal sovereignty and positioning gaming as a powerful economic engine for Native American communities. Under his leadership, U.S. tribal gaming revenues grew from $11 billion in 2000 to a record-breaking $43.9 billion in 2024, making tribal government gaming the largest segment of the U.S. gaming industry.

These revenues have helped fund schools, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development projects across Indian Country — fulfilling Stevens’ vision of gaming as a tool to improve lives and strengthen communities.

Jason Giles, IGA Executive Director, said: “Ernie was more than a chairman; he was a warrior, a statesman, and a champion for all of Indian Country. His legacy will be unmatched, and his voice will echo for generations to come.”

A global leader and connector

Stevens’ influence reached far beyond U.S. borders. His diplomatic skills and global perspective helped build stronger partnerships between gaming associations worldwide, including close collaboration with the European Casino Association on numerous international initiatives.

At global conferences and forums, Ernie was known for his warm presence and ability to connect cultures and regulators, always ready to share insights and foster cooperation. His commitment to regulatory excellence and industry integrity left a lasting mark on the global gaming community.

The ECA remembered that under Stevens’ leadership, “tribal gaming flourished and became a model of sustainable economic development, while collaboration and mutual respect between gaming industries worldwide were strengthened.”

Inspiring future generations

Beyond his institutional achievements, Stevens was a passionate advocate for mentoring the next generation of leaders. His personal journey — from boxing champion to respected international gaming statesman — inspired countless professionals across the industry.

In recognition of his impact, he was inducted into the American Gaming Association’s Gaming Hall of Fame in 2015.

Ernie Stevens is survived by his wife Cheryl, his children Brandon, Ernest III, Margaret, Maria, and Lois, and 20 grandchildren. The Indian Gaming Association has vowed to continue his mission of defending tribal sovereignty and driving economic empowerment for Native nations.
