The group will take possession on May 1, 2026, opening the door to a transformation of this iconic asset.
Groupe Barrière has announced the acquisition of the Casino of Póvoa de Varzim in Portugal, with the takeover scheduled for May 1, 2026. The transaction strengthens the group’s international growth strategy and its commitment to evolving the traditional casino model into more comprehensive entertainment venues.
Located in northern Portugal, just a few kilometers from Porto, the Casino of Póvoa de Varzim is an asset with strong historical significance. Founded in 1934, the complex combines gaming areas, dining spaces, and a theater with more than 400 seats, having established itself over decades as one of the region’s leading entertainment destinations.
The integration of this asset is part of the transformation process that Barrière is driving across its network of casinos. The group aims to turn these venues into true lifestyle destinations, where gaming is complemented by a broader offering that includes gastronomy, shows, and events.
In the case of Póvoa de Varzim, this strategy will translate into an enhanced experience, an upgraded positioning, and a more ambitious programming agenda, with the goal of strengthening the venue’s appeal and expanding its reach beyond gaming.
The French group also welcomed the casino’s teams, highlighting this transaction as the beginning of a new chapter for the establishment. The acquisition thus marks the first step in a broader plan aimed at unlocking the full potential of one of Portugal’s historic casinos.
