As happened the previous year, the study was carried out by Aximage Comunicação and Imagem Lda, a renowned consulting agency that offers research services for other companies.

After conducting more than 600 interviews online, we highlight the following results:
  • In 2020 there were fewer people playing, although with a slight increase in the preference for the licensed offer: 82.9%, 10.7% less than in 2019 (93.6%).
  • 45.2% played exclusively with licensed operators (+ 1.2%), 5.6% exclusively with non-licensees (- 0.4%) and 49.2% with both (- 0.8%) .
  • 66.3% of the players spent less than 50 euros (+ 3.8).
  • Regarding licensed gambling, 92.8% of those surveyed know how to differentiate between legal and illegal offer (1.4% more than the data obtained in 2019).
  • 71.5% of respondents say they choose legal gambling and betting sites for security reasons (63% in 2019). While those who prefer the unlicensed offer do so for the bonuses, odds and a wider range of products
  • During lockdown, 49.4% of those surveyed indicated that they had not changed their gaming habits, while 10.6% said that they had spent more money. 13.9% looked for other online gaming alternatives and 3.6% reported having played less than usual.
On the results of the study, Gabino Oliveira, president of APAJO, commented:
“This study confirms the responsible behavior of Portuguese players in general, although it also shows that the problem of illegal gambling persists. In this context, we have to increase joint work with the authorities to be more effective in reducing illegal gambling. Given that the vast majority recognize that the licensed offer is safer, we have to work, on the one hand, to strengthen the inspection and, on the other, to improve the products ”.
