The Colombian gaming sector works together and asks for the support of society in its request to the government to approve the reopening of its establishments and avoid the loss of more than 60,000 direct jobs and 18,000 indirect jobs
The movement called ‘Supports for the salvation of 240 thousand families in the casino sector’ (Apoya para la salvación de 240 mil familias del sector de casinos) has created a petition through the Change.org platform and so far they have obtained more than 17,000 virtual signatures.
We must remember that, as we have previously published, the Colombian gaming sector developed rigorous biosafety protocols with the advice of experts in epidemiology and public health, in order to guarantee the safety of collaborators and players. However, they are still waiting for responses from the National Government to obtain approval for the reopening.
90% of the sector is considering declaring insolvency, since in addition to the drastic reduction in sales, the vast majority have not reached agreements on rentals and have not been able to obtain any type of financial credit.
In this regard, Evert Montero Cárdenas, President of the Colombian gaming industry trade body (Fecoljuegos) said: “Multinational casino and bingo companies with a presence in Colombia are considering withdrawing their investment in the country, which would be extremely serious for the national economy. "
Fecoljuegos also highlights that due to the lockdown, the Colombian State has not obtained its usual income from gambling and taxes, millions that are usually invested in the health system. Thus, while in 2019 the sector contributed to the State with $ 600,000 million pesos, in three months of total closure in 2020, $ 135,000 million have not entered the state coffers.
