The royal decree draft on gambling business communications has been released; and, consequently, it has been confirmed that it is more restrictive than the first proposals. The few exceptions contained in the first text are history, and eight League clubs will have to reconfigure their strategy, because they could lose out on millions in sponsorship fees.
As expected, these new restrictions promoted by Alberto Garzon, the Spanish Minister of Consumer Affairs, have gone around the world and have been published by the international general press.
At INFOPLAY, we analyze the changes contained in this new draft:
Regarding the sponsorship of online operators in shirts, the first project only limited the sale of these products in children's sizes. Now, Valencia, Seville, Osasuna, Levante, Granada, Alavés, Leganés and Mallorca, which currently have a betting company as a sponsor of their shirts, will have to look for other options, since sponsorships are totally prohibited.
Regarding the transmission of betting adverts, the first project allowed these messages in event transmissions starting at 8:00 p.m. Now there are no exceptions, betting adverts can only be broadcast between 1:00 and 5:00, on radio, television and video streaming platforms.
Regarding welcome bonuses, the first project allowed up to a maximum amount of 100 euros, now they are completely eliminated and promotions will only be allowed to customers with more than a month of registration and who have made at least three deposits.
In reference to the use of the name or brand of gaming operators, its use to identify sports facilities or to substitute or add to the name of a team or competition is prohibited.
On the other hand, ONCE and SELAE maintain their differentiated treatment and have no time restrictions for their advertisements, regardless of the platform. In addition, there is a specific provision for "the participation of certain minors, considering the consolidated roots and tradition in holding National Lottery draws."
