The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has published on April 1st the results of a study developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that reveals that in those states where the use of masks is mandatory inside of restaurants the risk of Covid-19 cases was reduced by up to 90% and deaths by 80%
The report highlights the negative impact on the economy of the total closure and emphasizes that the application of adequate sanitary measures makes it possible to combine economy and health. In this way, these businesses can be kept open, while reducing the risk of contagion within them.
It should be noted that according to the study carried out by agencies of the United States Government Department of Health, the use of masks is particularly important, because presymptomatic and asymptomatic spread is responsible for almost 60% of COVID-19 cases.
The document also explains that after 8 weeks, in the states that reopened restaurants without the mandatory use of masks, the excess cases were 643.1 per 100,000 compared to 62.9 per 100,000 registered in the states with mandatory use mask.
In this regard, the authors suggest combining the universal and appropriate use of the mask, social distancing, hand hygiene, cleaning frequently touched surfaces, testing, capacity control, and increasing air ventilation.
We must emphasize that since February 5th the Community of Madrid established the mandatory use of masks both inside and outside bars and restaurants at all times, except when eating or drinking.
