Iosif Galea, a former compliance officer at the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), has been arrested in Italy on a European arrest warrant issued by Germany charging him with tax evasion. Also, he has an arrest warrant from Malta for leaking information from the regulator.
In Malta, Iosif Galea is wanted for his alleged involvement in a criminal conspiracy related to a scam in which confidential MGA information was leaked.
On the other hand, the Italian anti-mafia authorities have been investigating him since 2015, for having been a key official in online gaming companies registered in Malta and laundering money from the cocaine market controlled by 'Ndrangheta.
In 2013, Iosif Galea left his duties at the MGA to dedicate himself to independent consulting for the gaming industry. His company, Betsolution4U, was listed for tax evasion; and then, at the end of the investigations, it was removed from the list.
We must point out that his arrest has been surrounded by controversy, since in Italy they have accused the Maltese authorities of not issuing an arrest warrant until they received confirmation that he had been arrested in Italy. In this regard, from that country they underline Galea's important political connections with former Prime Minister Michelle Muscat and with Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli, sister-in-law of Prime Minister Robert Abela.
