The Follow-up Committee of the Macolin Convention has approved new guidelines to strengthen the protection of sports against illegal betting, competition manipulation, and gaming-associated risks.
Among the most relevant measures is the adaptation of the betting offer according to the level of risk. The statement highlights that several countries already exclude bets on under-18 competitions, amateur sports, and highly sensitive markets—such as yellow cards—due to their growing exposure to manipulation.
The Committee also proposes a classification of operators into five distinct categories, ranging from those considered reliable to those that should be excluded. The goal is to clearly differentiate responsible operators from those who pose a direct threat to sports integrity.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed data-sharing protocols between athletes and operators to detect instances of players betting on their own sport, a strictly prohibited practice. All such initiatives must be carried out in full compliance with data protection laws.
The session also focused on the regulation of sports data collection and sales to prevent this information from feeding illegal betting markets or facilitating match-fixing.
Looking ahead to the coming months, the Committee plans to drive new accessions to the Convention, continue national assessments, and establish a working group dedicated to leveraging artificial intelligence to counter illegal betting websites.
