Spanish tennis player Aaron Cortes has been hit with a hefty 15-year suspension from the sport after admitting to a shocking 35 breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP). The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed this punitive action today, shedding light on Cortes' grave transgressions.
The 29-year-old, who once soared to a career-high world singles ranking of 955 in September 2017, confessed to a string of violations spanning from 2016 to 2018. These infractions include manipulating match outcomes, accepting illicit payments to manipulate matches, failing to report corrupt approaches, engaging in tennis betting, and even offering money to tournament officials in exchange for a wild card.
As part of the punishment, Cortes has been fined a staggering $75,000, with $56,250 of the amount suspended. He cooperated fully with the ITIA's investigation and voluntarily accepted the agreed sanction, relinquishing the right to a hearing before an independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer.
Cortes' period of ineligibility commenced on March 27, 2024, and will persist until midnight on March 26, 2039. During this time, he is barred from participating in any tennis events authorized or sanctioned by the members of the ITIA, including the ATP, ITF, WTA, and various national associations.
The ITIA, an autonomous body formed by tennis authorities worldwide, remains steadfast in its mission to uphold the integrity of professional tennis and will continue to take robust measures against any form of corruption within the sport.
