CIBELAE extends its congratulations to Paulo Alexandre Duarte de Sousa for taking office as the new president of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. The Corporation believes that his leadership will further strengthen this institution’s great commitment to the community.
Paulo Alexandre Duarte de Sousa was sworn in on May 20 as the new president of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, highlighting that he accepted the invitation "with pride, but also with a sense of responsibility. Pride because Santa Casa is an institution of inestimable public utility, because its mission is to bring well-being to people, starting with the most disadvantaged. Sense of responsibility because, aware of the serious challenges the institution faces today, I will always honor its historical legacy,” he stated before the audience that filled the Draw Room.
Paulo Alexandre Duarte de Sousa promised “dedication to the workers and teams of Santa Casa,” as well as “to the multiple activities of the institution,” recalling the “Works of Mercy and its Commitment.”
In a ceremony also attended by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, the Minister of Labor, Solidarity, and Social Security, Maria do Rosário Palma Ramalho, described the new provider as “a manager with vast and recognized professional experience, but also with a proven track record in the social area.”
“The biggest challenge is to ensure that Santa Casa continues to provide the best care, especially to the most unprotected and disadvantaged,” said the minister, noting that the composition of the rest of the Council will be announced shortly and leaving a “message of confidence to all those who build Santa Casa day by day.”
At 56 years old, Paulo Alexandre Duarte de Sousa holds a degree in Business Management from ISEG and has postgraduate degrees in Banking Management and Export Strategies. He has extensive experience in management positions, such as the presidency of the Executive Committee of Banco Comercial e de Investimentos, S.A., the Central Real Estate Financing Department of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, and the presidency of the Board of Directors of Wolfpart, SGPS.
In the social sphere, Duarte de Sousa was vice-president of the Portuguese Red Cross and a member of the board of the Centro da Costa de Estoril for two terms. He also has experience in matters related to the real estate sector, having been responsible for the creation of the Social Rental Exchange. The now president of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa also led the consortium formed by the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation and the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Group to manage an Urban Development Fund, under the Community Initiative JESSICA, aimed at Urban Rehabilitation and Regeneration.
