The UK Gambling Commission has announced that 15 people have been charged with offences under the Gambling Act 2005, following an investigation into alleged cheating involving bets placed on the date of the 2024 General Election.
The investigation, which began in June 2024, focused on individuals suspected of exploiting confidential information — specifically, advance knowledge of the proposed election date — to gain an unfair advantage in betting markets. Such conduct constitutes the criminal offence of cheating under Section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005.
All are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court at 10:00 AM on Friday, 13 June 2025.
As the independent regulator of gambling in Great Britain, the Gambling Commission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers and the public, ensuring confidence in the industry, and upholding high standards among licensed operators.
Under Sections 27 and 28 of the Gambling Act 2005, the Commission has the authority to investigate offences and bring criminal prosecutions where appropriate.
In its statement, the Commission stressed that it will continue to enforce the law rigorously and take firm action against illegal betting practices, including investigating and prosecuting criminal offences.
The Commission also clarified that it cannot provide further details while these cases remain under criminal investigation.
