The Kansspelautoriteit (Ksa, gaming authority in the Netherlands) has recently published its Annual Report for the year 2021 and dedicates an additional report to online gaming, after the entry into force of the regulation last October.
In this regard, René Jansen, president of the KSA, has confirmed that to date they have granted 18 online gaming licenses and there are others in process. And it also highlights the following aspects:
- The size of the online gaming market in 2021 amounted to more than €185 million (gross gaming result, deposit minus prizes paid) in the fourth quarter.
- As of early March, there were 634,000 user accounts. An unknown number of players have an account with various providers, so the figure must be considerably lower.
- Several unlicensed providers no longer offer their services in the Netherlands as of October 1. In other words, the number of users still betting with illegal providers has been drastically reduced and most are able to do so in a safe and regulated environment.
- Since October 1, the total number of hours consumers spend on bet sites has been higher than before October 1. This, according to the KSA, may be because the legalization of online gaming drew consumers' attention to its existence and the lead-up to legalization saw a lot of media attention.
- The Central Register of Gaming Exclusion (Cruks) has exceeded 10,000 registrations.
