PRESS RELEASE

The Minister of Consumer Affairs, Alberto Garzón, assured today that "in a few weeks" the Council of Ministers will approve the Royal Decree on Commercial Communications of Gambling Activities. A legal instrument, which will be the first to establish a "strict" regulation of advertising in the sector, will put Spain at the "forefront" of Europe.

During his response in the Senate to a question from the Socialist Group, Garzón explained that we are witnessing a growth in the gambling and betting sector that has "a social response against" due to its "profound affection" in the most vulnerable sectors of the society.

"We are talking about a sector and a problem on the rise, with a special affection in certain vulnerable sectors such as younger people, working-class neighborhoods and working families," said Garzón, who considers that these sectors "are more sensitive to the belief that a couple of clicks can solve the economic problems that are structurally dragged ”.

According to the minister, "we should be alarmed", as the data indicates that in 2019 40% of new players were under 26 years old. "The sector is growing on the backs of very vulnerable sectors and advertising is one of the ways by which the sector has grown and by which this type of activity is normalized, which can have disastrous consequences as you have well described", has indicated. The absence of regulation means for Garzón that "we are in the law of the jungle."

Garzón has advanced that his office continues to work on a comprehensive plan because "the problem of gambling does not end by prohibiting advertising" and that he will present more measures in the coming months. "We are talking about a social problem about the leisure model that we encourage in our youth," added the minister, who invited all political groups to reflect. "Our cities have been built with streets that have many more betting houses than green spaces and that is aggravated by situations such as confinement where green spaces and parks are closed but the betting houses are open," he assured.
