A JACKIEPOT on the occasion of Alberto Garzón's statements

Today we offer you a new JACKIEPOT, the reflections of our director on the latest statements and decisions of the Minister of Consumer Affairs of Spain and her purpose of meddling in regional legislation.

The latest regulatory movements in some Autonomous Communities (Valencia, Aragon, Balearic Islands) have emboldened the Minister of Consumption with statements in which he turns to seeker of justice for a presumed problem with gaming in Spain.

Perhaps it has been the other way around: the arrival of Minister Garzón to regulate online gaming has fueled the ambitious and unscrupulous of some governments that are trying to obtain merits by drinking from these populists and rather cheap tendencies that treat Spanish like small children.

In short, each reinforces the other in an act of unacceptable onanism because it splashes into a sector that feeds many families and that is hyper regulated and supervised. These two data do not matter, apparently. Because, gentlemen, a sector is taken for granted that it is regulated and supervised (and the gaming industry is in both fields until practically drowning).

Now, the populist tendencies of gimmicky policies are succeeding an industry (disunited and weak) that does not know where to put the blow. And ‘a dog's face’ does not seem to be the most effective way to act because the media is not in the business of giving the sector a foothold. Not even the true political leaders who support the sector in some Autonomous Communities show up on social networks to join an event or give it minimal publicity. In addition, there are certain factions in the sector with a lack of manners and sensitivity to act without destroying the achievements.

The industry is becoming troublesome and the best way is to get out of it, many regulators will think. If in addition, the State and the ONCE want to take part of the profit banquet, it only remains to demonize an industry that leaves its skin, sweat and money to create wealth. This is an incontestable fact, but that provable reality alone is not good enough.

In addition to government populism, the general press is being forced to live off the institutional publicity of the central and autonomous governments. And a television fueled by state aid, is a press that will never tell the truth. The industry missed another chance to get closer to society in the recent health crisis. And it is missing the opportunity to arm itself academically with the great multitude of restless minds that could put their intelligence at the service of a just cause.

The politicians are in front because they think that being belligerent with the sector gives them votes and allows them to greedily take positions in a leadership towards stupidity. I'm confident that Alberto Garzón is much fairer than his latest statements. And will quiet the greedy mindundis of power. When I met the minister, I got the impression that his intelligence was able to glimpse the truth behind the manipulation of some power groups. I still think that and I hope that he acts with that capacity for dialogue that exalts him and doesn't get carried away by the fear of the recent fall of votes in the Basque Country and Galicia, thinking that the heavy-handed way will return them.
