GERMANY:  Industry warns about the proliferation of illegal gaming

The slot machine industry in Germany has spoken out after the Berlin-Tempelhof police discovered a machine with tampered software and illegal poker tables in a bar with 27 people between the ages of 16 and 38.

Undoubtedly, this fact shows that the current restrictions on the regulated and legal offer of gaming and its establishments are also having pernicious results in the rest of Europe. Germany is the last case after those known in Spain, more specifically in the Balearic Islands, where the police also detected the existence of clandestine gaming venues.

On this reality, the German machine industry represented by the Die Deutsche Automatenwirtschaft (DAW) and the Association of Machine Shoppeople Berlin and East Germany alert with the following messages from their representatives.

First, Georg Stecker, DAW's board spokesman, commented:

“We welcome the deployment of the Berlin police. For years we have observed with concern that illegal gambling is growing in the capital, precisely because the legal offer has been massively suppressed here. This shows that regulation depends on the quality of the offer and the operator. We can only effectively combat illegality and protect consumers with quality-oriented regulation, improved access to the profession and by strengthening the legal offer."

Second, Thomas Breitkopf, first president of vending machine dealers in Berlin and East Germany eV, said:

“It shows once again that illegal gaming in Berlin is now out of control. For years, the protection of young people and players has been trampled on and now also protection against infections. The answer to this can only be consistent and tough action against illegal vendors and a strengthening of legal machine operators."
