In Colombia, the National Government, its institutions and the 16 legal operators come together with the aim of strengthening legal gaming by 2021 as a key sector for the country's economy.
Despite the closure of the premises due to the COVID-19 crisis, the gaming sector has continued to grow in the Colombian market thanks to online gaming and sports betting, which grew from 10% to 20% in the last year. In this regard, the gaming industry was able to contribute 253 billion pesos (approximately 60 million euros) that were used in the health of Colombians in times as difficult as the current ones.
On the growth of online gambling, María Eugenia Romero, Marketing Manager of Zamba.co, the leading online casino and betting house in Colombia, commented that the online mode has offered users entertainment from any device and from the security of their homes. She also confirmed that betting volumes grew up to 125% in some categories.
Regarding sports betting, 2020 is expected to close with revenues above 83 billion (approximately 19.4 million euros), a higher figure than in 2019, which was close to 68 billion pesos ( 16 million euros approximately).
On the other hand, the sector highlights the importance of guaranteeing the protection and safety of users in a year with major sporting events such as the America's Cup and the European Championship.
