Already on the first day of his visit to Ostwestfalen, Steinmeier was a guest at the Alten Gießerei, a property of the Merkur Group, and opened a special exhibition of the German Emigration Museum there.
Before around 160 invited guests – including Paul and Karin Gauselmann – Steinmeier gave a speech and praised the pioneering spirit and determination of the people in Espelkamp.
Like a magnifying glass, Espelkamp made it clear what achievement the people had made after the war. With the many stories of flight and expulsion, the city is also an excellent example of how people can be successfully integrated.
Whether guest workers, Russian Germans, Balkan or Ukrainian refugees – Espelkamp has repeatedly given people a new home. "Hardly any other city in Germany has been so shaped by all this," explained Steinmeier. The successful integration is exemplary for the whole of Germany. "It is worth learning from Espelkamp. Much good has been done."
