The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has highlighted concerning news from France. Online betting during the Euro 2024 competition stagnated compared to Euro 2021, falling 50% short of official forecasts. This comes amidst growing anxieties about the expansion of the black market within the country. Read the AFJEL press release linked in the comment section below.
Nicolas Beraud, President of AFJEL, stated:
"The initial assessment of Euro 2024 reveals figures that completely contradict the anticipated online sports betting frenzy on the legal market. Authorized operators have made two key observations. Firstly, the competition ran smoothly thanks to operators adhering to ANJ guidelines and player protection regulations, which are continually being improved. Secondly, operators fully respected their additional self-imposed commitments outlined in various Charters."
"The second observation is that while Euro 2024 yielded surprisingly low results for licensed operators, the illegal market is experiencing significant growth. This is happening through the 'cannibalization' of the online sports betting sector, diverting players away from legal options. Unregulated online casino sites have offered highly attractive odds for Euro 2024 sports betting with complete impunity and a complete lack of player protection measures. Despite the regulator's efforts, blocking illegal sites remains ineffective. Currently, over 4 million players are exposed to significant risks."
